Now, before we delve into Clause 4 of the standard, there’s an important pit stop we must make. ISO 42001 contains a dedicated section — Clause 3: Terms and Definitions — which sets the foundation for the entire standard. Think of it this way: if you and I don’t share the same vocabulary, even the most well-written standard will feel like speaking two different languages.
The standard defines 26 key terms that every practitioner, implementer, and auditor must understand. Some are familiar from other management system standards (like “policy,” “objective,” or “corrective action”). But others are tailored specifically for the AI context — such as AI system impact assessment or data quality. These definitions are not there just for compliance; they ensure everyone — from top management to data scientists — is speaking the same language.
In today’s post, we’ll introduce you to these terms through the lens of a fictitious company — FinTrust Bank — which we will carry forward as a running case study throughout this series. By rooting definitions in a practical context, you’ll see not just what they mean on paper, but how they come alive in real-world AI governance.

To truly understand ISO 42001, we need a relatable organization. Enter FinTrust Bank, a mid-sized but ambitious financial institution headquartered in London, with a strong presence across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.

- Risk & Fraud Detection: Machine learning models scanning millions of transactions daily.
- Credit Scoring: AI-driven decision engines offering instant loan approvals.

Management Commitment
Here’s the crucial part — FinTrust’s top management is not just aware of AI but deeply invested in doing it responsibly. The CEO and Board have formally endorsed ISO 42001 adoption, positioning it as part of their “Trust in Tech” strategy. They’ve:
